Research Interests:

I am a physical oceanographer with an interest in the physical processes that cause turbulent mixing and affect marine environment systems. Turbulent mixing plays an essential role in the ocean by smoothing (stirring & diffusion) the distribution of water properties and materials, consequently affecting the physical and biogeochemical environment. Understanding how mixing occurs and at what rates it proceeds is needed to explore ocean variability. It is essential to parameterize numerical models because the scale of mixing processes is smaller than the computational grid in a regional, global, or climate model. However, the phenomena that lead to turbulence have significant uncertainties in space and time because related measurements are sparse. Therefore, field observations along this line are needed but are challenging because the seagoing measurements are conducted in a vast and complex ocean. I am particularly interested in (1) generations, evolution, and dissipation of nonlinear internal waves as a result of the barotropic tide–topography interactions, (2) small-scale and submesoscale processes as a result of the Kuroshio encountering the abrupt topography, and (3) turbulent mixing driven by above processes. These topographic features include submarine ridges/seamounts, coastline variations (e.g., headland), and islands. Recently, I am also interested in the physical processes and turbulence in the diurnal warm layer (upper ocean boundary layer; < 10 m) caused by penetrating solar radiation.
